1366 PhD Scholarships awarded by FCT on the 2019 Call
(Only Available in Portuguese)
The FCT has released the final results of the 2019 Doctoral Scholarship Competition in all scientific areas. 1,366 PhD scholarships were awarded, corresponding to a success rate of 41% of the total number of candidates.
Of the selected candidates, 59% are women and 11% are foreign nationals. Scholarships were awarded to candidates from 32 foreign countries, with the largest number of Brazilian candidates, followed by Italians.
The fellows will participate in PhD Programs at Portuguese or foreign universities, distributed by more than 80 degree-granting institutions. Of the total scholarships awarded, 77% refer to work plans fully carried out in Portugal, 18% are mixed scholarships with work plans to be partially performed abroad, and 5% refer to work plans fully performed abroad.
The applications were analyzed by 36 scientific panels, with three evaluation criteria: i) merit of the candidate: ii) merit of the work plan; and iii) merit of the reception conditions. 365 national experts from the scientific and academic community participated in this assessment, of which 53% were women and affiliated with more than 20 institutions.
The FCT will now contract scholarships commencing between September 1, 2019 and August 1, 2020. Payments will begin in December and students who have already started their work plan will receive their retroactive scholarships.
In 2019, FCT estimates to contract 1,600 doctoral scholarships, including the scholarships of this competition and those awarded under the doctoral program competitions, which corresponds to an increase of 16% compared to 2018.
The next PhD Scholarship Competition in all scientific areas will be announced at the end of 2019. As with the last three competitions, the application period will run during the first quarter of 2020, so that results are available. until summer.

2019 2020 calls

The Programme for the 2019-2023 new Portuguese government has been approved. I add a few excerpts in Portuguese.

In essence, there are no major changes, but the promise (??) that more funds will exist for science. But this is always politics. Nevertheless, please bear in mind that the focus seems to be in Post-Docs and less on PhD grants\calls. And that the sooner (sometimes with year(s) in advance) you  prepare a really top, competitive proposal the BETTER ( because funding for maths or theoretical physics (safe if it is numerical....) is short). So please,   check the  FCT site REGULARLY  and do prepare asap: the new PhD but surely new Post doc calls will be by the end of 2019 and it is better you have a proposal fully loaded and ready to compete, made as yesterday, preferably last week. If you are going to do this for next month, forget it. The call will be around the end of 2019 and results may take about a year to come out. Please plan and please do prepare in a robust manner for a strenuous and demanding exercise.

About this workshop

The Fall Workshops on Geometry and Physics have been held yearly since 1992, and bring together Spanish and Portuguese geometers and physicists, along with an ever increasing number of participants from outside the Iberian Peninsula. The meetings aim to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between researchers of different fields in Differential Geometry, Applied Mathematics and Physics, and always include a substantial number of enthusiastic young researchers amongst the participants.

Main topics

The Workshop is open to any topic in the interplay between Geometry and Physics, including:

Classical field theory

Control theory

Integrable systems

Lie algebroids and mechanics

Lorentz geometry

Mechanics of continuous media

Poisson geometry

Quantum gravity

Quantum mechanics

Relativity

Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry

String theory

Supergravity and supersymmetry

It is nice to see the Nobel prize going towards the explanation why one (like me) is extremly short of breath nearing the 4K line up the mountains...
