If you do not appreciate\enjoy this clip, you are in a state worse than 'total annihilation'. It is simply brilliant. Super-outstanding. Clear and focused yet light and edging.

I have been 'there' more than 10 times. Even in between flights\transfers, if I can, I put a sort of 'Monte Carlo' rally to check all stops and transports from eg CdG to the Louvre and yes, you bet I always, always, go in through the Denon entrance. Always.

And always turn right to that statue and take a deep breath before looking left. What is there is mind-blowing. Edging. Wow. And then the visit, even if for 30 min or all day, takes place. I can say I visit it for about 72h ir I went there and visit all of it during 3 days in a row.

This video is simply ... wow.

And why do I go through Denon?

My Mother told me so. So I did. Always do.

You do it as well.

But take a deep breath at you turn right of that statue and look on your left. You need to be 'there', of course.

Public universities move to offer MOOCs for credit | Inside Higher Ed

Public universities move to offer MOOCs for credit | Inside Higher Ed:

Two announcements this week suggest that MOOCs -- massive open online courses -- will increasingly include a route for students to receive academic credit.
Georgia State University announced Tuesday that it will start to review MOOCs for credit much like it reviews courses students have taken at other institutions, or exams they have taken to demonstrate competency in certain areas.
And Academic Partnerships, a company that works with public universities to put their degree programs online, announced an effort in which the first course of these programs can become a MOOC, with full credit awarded to those who successfully complete the course. The educational idea is that this offering will encourage more students to start degree programs. The financial idea is that the tuition revenue gained by participating institutions when students move from the MOOC to the rest of the program (which will continue to charge tuition) will offset the additional costs of offering the first course free.
Among the first universities planning to make the debut course in their online programs a MOOC are Cleveland State, Florida International, Lamar and Utah State Universities and the Universities of Arkansas, Cincinnati, Texas at Arlington and West Florida.
The announcements reflect increasing interest in turning MOOCs -- initially offered by elite institutions for educational gain but no credit -- into a tool that can be used by a range of students (including those who want credit) and into a strategy that can help a range of institutions without the endowments or prestige of MOOC pioneers such as Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

String and M-Theory: Answering the Critics

Abstract

Using as a springboard a three-way debate between theoretical physicist Lee Smolin, philosopher of science Nancy Cartwright and myself, I address in layman’s terms the issues of why we need a unified theory of the fundamental interactions and why, in my opinion, string and M-theory currently offer the best hope. The focus will be on responding more generally to the various criticisms. I also describe the diverse application of string/M-theory techniques to other branches of physics and mathematics which render the whole enterprise worthwhile whether or not “a theory of everything” is forthcoming.

Dear Obbie...

http://www.science20.com/chemical_education/blog/fusing_modern_physics_dated_curriculum-101344?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=t.co

An "open letter" in the form of a youtube video to the president regarding physics education complained that most of the physics taught in high school is at least 150 years old. It does score some good points in arguing why modern physics should be included in a basic course. How can students accept the notion of a dense nucleus consisting of positively charged particles without having any knowledge of the strong force? How does carbon 14's beta decay make any sense without weak interactions? And twin paradoxes aside, without relativity we have no idea why gold has its color, why thallium is poisonous and why mercury is liquid.

Multinational MOOCs

'' The rapid expansion of massive open online courses (MOOCs) has left many in international higher education asking how they can compete. With elite American universities dominating the emerging market, will foreign institutions be left behind?
“If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em,” some have decided. The California-based MOOC provider Coursera counts eight foreign institutions among its 33 university partners. Meanwhile, 12 universities in the United Kingdom have launched a new MOOC platform of their own. The Open University, a distance education institution based in London, recently announced the formation of Futurelearn in partnership with Cardiff and Lancaster Universities; the Universities of Birmingham, Bristol, East Anglia, Exeter, Leeds, Southampton, St Andrews and Warwick; and King’s College, University of London.
