European Commission - EASME - Horizon 2020 SME Instrument
European Commission - EASME - Horizon 2020 SME Instrument:
'via Blog this' The Honourable Schoolboy
The first applications are in, and the first results for the European Commission's Horizon 2020 SME Instrument have surpassed expectations! The first cut-off date has just passed on 18 June 2014, and 2 666 proposals have been submitted.
The open disruptive innovation scheme attracted the most proposals (885), followed by low carbon energy systems (372), nanotechnologies (305) and eco-innovation/raw materials (241). The general expected success rate for applications in this cut-off date is of 6.2%.
Italy led the number of applications (436), with Spain as a close second (420), followed by the United Kingdom (232), Germany (188), France (167) and Hungary (166).
The majority of SMEs applied individually, and most consortia were of two SMEs.
The EASME plans to have evaluated the proposals by the end of July 2014.
After our first exciting results, we are looking forward to working together with SMEs to promote disruptive innovation in Europe.

The five Public-Private Partnerships, called 'Joint Technology Initiatives' (JTIs), are:
- Innovative Medicines 2 (IMI2): to develop next generation vaccines, medicines and treatments, such as new antibiotics (Link to factsheet)
- Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 (FCH2): to expand the use of clean and efficient technologies in transport, industry and energy (Link to factsheet)
- Clean Sky 2 (CS2): to develop cleaner, quieter aircraft with significantly less CO2 emissions (Link to factsheet)
- Bio-based Industries (BBI): to use renewable natural resources and innovative technologies for greener everyday products (Link to factsheet)

seven broad challenges:
1. Health, demographic change and wellbeing
2. Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine, maritime and inland water research, and the bioeconomy
3. Secure, clean and efficient energy
4. Smart, green and integrated transport
5. Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials
6. Inclusive, innovative and reflective societies
7. Secure & innovative societies
What's in it for small businesses?
Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are encouraged to participate across the whole Horizon 2020 programme. They can engage in collaborative projects as part of a consortium, or seek support through a new dedicated SME instrument for highly innovative smaller companies. The integrated approach and simplification efforts should lead to a minimum of 20%, or about €8.65 billion, of the total combined budgets of the specific objective 'Leadership in enabling and industrial technologies' (LEITs) and the 'Societal Challenges' going to SMEs. The SME instrument will be crucial in achieving this target. Over the course of Horizon 2020, at least €3 billion will be allocated to the SME instrument.
What is the Fast Track for Innovation?
Fast Track to Innovation (FTI) is a new element of Horizon 2020 added during the legislative process. It will be launched as a pilot action in 2015. It will support innovation actions under the specific objective "Leadership enabling and industrial technologies" and under the "societal challenges", relating to any technology field, on the basis of a continuously open call, and time to grant not exceeding six months. Proposals may be submitted at any time. The Commission shall issue three cut-off dates per year to evaluate proposals. Any legal entity may apply, with a minimum of three up to a maximum of five participants in any action. Up to 100 proposals are foreseen to be funded under the pilot action.
What is happening to the Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) that existed under FP7?
Horizon 2020 includes provisions to continue supporting public-private partnerships.
The Commission has proposed (IP/13/668) an investment of €17.5 billion, with just under €10 billion coming from industry, under the €22 billion Innovation Investment Package into the following Joint Technology Initiatives (JTIs):
- Innovative Medicines 2 (IMI2): to develop next generation vaccines, medicines and treatments, such as new antibiotics;
- Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 (FCH2): to expand the use of clean and efficient technologies in transport, industry and energy;
- Clean Sky 2 (CS2): to develop cleaner, quieter aircraft with significantly less CO2 emissions;
- Bio-based Industries (BBI): to use renewable natural resources and innovative technologies for greener everyday products;
- Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership (ECSEL): to boost Europe’s electronics manufacturing capabilities.

Following on from the very successful inaugural event of 2011, the IOP Materials and Characterisation group are pleased to announce another one day Cultural Heritage Science event. The objective is to introduce and discuss both cutting edge and traditional science behind the preservation of our heritage, and the ethical framework which shapes its experiments. For this event we have a select number of invited speakers who are experts in their respective field (the list of invited speakers can be found here). The topics under discussion will embrace a diverse range such as ethics in heritage science, heritage materials, museum artefacts and their conservation, and different scientific techniques and their applicability.
The event offers a fantastic occasion for new and experienced colleagues along with those with a curious interest to share best practice and build relationships for future collaborative research. The meeting will take place in the newly opened Mary Rose Museum at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard and will conclude with a guided tour of the new museum and excellent conservation facilities. Places are limited due to the venue size and so early registration is advised.

Everything you need to know: Delta Aquarid meteor shower | Astronomy Essentials | EarthSky: "Everything you need to know: Delta Aquarid meteor shower"
'via Blog this' The Honourable Schoolboy
This year, 2014, is particularly favorable for watching this shower in late July, thanks to the new moon on July 26.
In years when the moon is out of the way, the broad maximum of this shower can be expected to produce 15 to 20 meteors per hour in the predawn hours around July 29. The downside is that a new moon coinciding with the peak of the Delta Aquarids means it’s pretty much a full moon that accompanies the peak mornings of the 2014 Perseid shower (August 11, 12 and 13).

Everything you need to know: Perseid meteor shower | Astronomy Essentials | EarthSky: "Everything you need to know: Perseid meteor shower"
No matter where you live worldwide, the 2014 Perseid meteor shower will probably peak on the mornings of August 11, 12 and 13. On a dark, moonless night, you can often see 50 or more meteors per hour from northerly latitudes, and from southerly latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, perhaps about one-third that many meteors. Unfortunately, in 2014, full moon comes on August 10. And not just any full moon, but the closest supermoon of this year. Thus, on the Perseids’ peak mornings, a big and bright waning gibbous moon will obscure all but the brightest meteors. But all is not lost! It just means you need to start observing before the shower’s peak this year.

É um meio onde há de tudo e depois há uma camada de pessoas que são alcoólicas apostólicas. Drogas fracas, drogas fortes... É tudo necessário para fazer boa ciência. Não vou dizer nomes.
