“UM NOVO HORIZONTE”, DE PAULO VARGAS MONIZ

 

Professor e investigador na área da cosmologia quântica apresenta, em livro digital gratuito, uma reflexão sobre o Ensino Superior em Portugal e propõe novos caminhos para a gestão eficaz e sustentável das instituições de ensino do futuro.

 

A Escrytos, plataforma de autopublicação da LeYa, acaba de editar, em ebook, o livro «Um Novo Horizonte», da autoria do investigador e professor universitário Paulo Vargas Moniz.

 

Num ensaio de opinião de linguagem simples, o autor partilha as suas ideias, críticas e reflexões relacionadas com a busca por um novo (e melhor) horizonte para o Ensino Superior em Portugal, realidade que bem conhece e que há muito acompanha.

 

Partindo de cenário - hipotético mas que em muitos países se pode adivinhar - de descontentamento, de redução do número de alunos nas escolas básicas e secundárias causada pelo envelhecimento da população e por uma baixa taxa de natalidade e de imigração, o livro antevê o enfraquecimento e mesmo desaparecimento de muitas instituições de ensino, com o efeito destrutivo que este pode ter na Sociedade.

 

Para o autor, contrariar esta tendência passa obrigatoriamente por mais gente nova, mais graduados (jovens) e mais emprego qualificado, conduzindo à restauração da vida social e económica e à geração de um ciclo, que a médio, mas mais certamente a longo prazo, recolhe bem-estar e qualidade, ou seja, legítima riqueza social.

 

Apostando na mudança, Paulo Vargas Moniz lança neste seu livro várias "hipóteses para corrigir trajectórias".

 

O autor, que acredita que "a gestão de uma Instituição de Ensino Superior tem que obedecer a um plano estratégico, que deve assentar numa visão", começa for fazer um diagnóstico do estado do Ensino Superior em Portugal, recorrendo a áreas chave para melhor o explicar: a economia, onde inclui, por exemplo, a filantropia "como forma de manter uma dinâmica de investimento nas instituições de ensino superior"; a importância das acções de sinergia; e o papel, que o autor considera incontornável, da Inteligência Artificial na sociedade do conhecimento, que virá alterar profundamente os métodos de ensino-aprendizagem. Outra área chave que o livro destaca é a proatividade, através da qual é possível mudar toda a cultura e a política do munto académico, que, segundo o autor, deve assentar mais ousadia do que no bem português método de "desenrascar".

 

Seguir sempre os mesmos procedimentos e linhas orientadoras do passado, conclui o autor, pode e vai levar ao declínio e mesmo ao desaparecimento de algumas instituições de ensino superior. Neste ensaio construtivo sobre aspetos específicos do ensino superior em Portugal no século XXI o autor deseja partilhar propostas que contrariem esse cenário, conteúdos que, assegura, podem também ser aplicados em quaisquer tipos de instituições de ensino pós-liceal ou secundário.

Sobre o autor

 

Professor na Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI) e membro vitalício do Clare Hall, um dos centros de estudos avançados da Universidade de Cambridge, Paulo Vargas Moniz formou-se e doutorou-se na Universidade de Lisboa, tendo o seu percurso académico passado também pelo Centro de Astrofísica e Gravitação do Instituto Superior Técnico (CENTRA). Dedica-se ao estudo de cosmologia quântica e caologia, entre outras áreas transversais a estas ciências. Deu aulas, montou laboratórios, supervisionou mestrados e doutoramentos, e é autor do livro “Quantum Cosmology - The Supersymmetric Perspective” (vol. I e II), tendo também prestado serviços editoriais à revista especializada "Classical and Quantum Gravity", a cujo conselho consultivo pertence.

"A NEW HORIZON", BY PAULO VARGAS MONIZ

 

Professor and researcher in the area of quantum cosmology presents, in a free digital book, a reflection on Higher Education in Portugal and proposes new paths for the effective and sustainable management of educational institutions of the future.

 

Escrytos, LeYa's self-publishing platform has just edited, in an ebook, the book "Um Novo Horizonte", written by researcher and university professor Paulo Vargas Moniz.

 

In a simple language opinion essay, the author shares his ideas, criticisms and reflections related to the search for a new (and better) horizon for Higher Education in Portugal, a reality he knows well and has long followed.

 

Starting from a scenario - hypothetical but one that in many countries can be guessed - of discontent, of reducing the number of students in primary and secondary schools caused by an ageing population and by a low rate of birth and immigration, the book foresees the weakening and even disappearance of many educational institutions, with the destructive effect that this can have on society.

 

For the author, contrary to this trend necessarily passes by more people nova, more graduates (young) and  more qualified employment, leading to the restoration of social and economic life and the generation of a cycle, which in the medium, but more certainly, in the long run, collects well-being and quality, that is, legitimate social wealth.

 

Betting on change, Paulo Vargas Moniz launches in this book several "hypotheses to correct trajectories".

 

The author, who believes that "the management of a Higher Education Institution has to comply with a strategic plan, which should be based on a vision", begins a diagnosis of the state of higher education in Portugal, using key areas to better explain it:  the economy, which includes, for example, philanthropy "as a   way to maintain a dynamic of investment in higher education institutions"; the importance of synergy actions; and the role, which the author considers unavoidable, of Artificial Intelligence in the knowledge society, which will profoundly alter the teaching-learning methods. Another key area that the book highlights is proactivity, through whichit is possible to change the whole culture and politics of the academic world, which, according to the author, should be based more daring than on the good Portuguese method of "undoing".

 

Always follow the same procedures and guidelines of the past, concludes the author, can and will lead to the decline and even the disappearance of some higher education institutions. In this  constructive essay on specific aspects of higher education in Portugal in the 21st   century the author wishes to share proposals that contradict this scenario, content that, it assures, can also be applied in any type of post-liceal or secondary education institutions.

 

 

 

"Um Novo Horizonte", by Paulo Vargas Moniz, is a free ebook. At the end of the book the the author challenges his readers to make a donation to one of a set of institutions that suggest there.

About the author

 

Professor at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) and a lifetime member of Clare Hall, one of the centres of advanced studies of the University of Cambridge, Paulo Vargas Moniz graduated and received his Doctorate from the University of Lisbon and his academic career was also passed by the Center for Astrophysics and Gravitation of the Instituto Superior Técnico (CENTRA). He is dedicated to the study of quantum cosmology and chaology, among other areas transversal to these sciences. He taught, set up laboratories, supervised master's and doctorate degrees, and is the author of the book Quantum Cosmology - The Supersymmetric Perspective (vol. I and II), has also provided editorial services to the specialized magazine "Classical and Quantum Gravity", to whose advisory board it belongs.

If you know a bit of how the 100 years war came about and, before that, the civil war of the early 14th century, and noticing that '' a treasure trove of records illuminating the contrasting reigns of her uncle Edward II and cousin Edward III'', this is interesting reading as she must have been quite savvy to survive plus succeed. Mind you, this Edward III was an old pre-Lancastrian (can I say it?), father of a John Gaunt who then was the father of  Philipa of Lancaster (yes, 'our 'Queen' as in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philippa_of_Lancaster). In addition, Philipa was the sister of the future Henry IV and therefore the aunt of Henry V. I could go on from Plantagenet to Lancaster versus York and then Tudor. Ah, and it seems true that 'mum's the word' and it seems that it was mum who told his young Prince Henry (the one with the funny hat looking west from Sagres in the Algarve;https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Henry_the_Navigator) that he should venture into building ships and more ships. The PhD studentship aims to support research activities within the scope
