A spike in geomagnetic activity has given starwatchers a rare chance to capture the aurora borealis - more commonly known as the northern lights - over relatively southern parts of the UK.
The phenomenon is caused by electrically charged particles shooting out from the Sun, battering into the Earth’s magnetic field and exciting gases in the upper atmosphere.
