The League of European Research Universities (LERU) will present its new position paper “Interdisciplinarity and the 21st century research-intensive university” in Brussels on 14 December 2016 during a breakfast launch event.
Interdisciplinarity is driven by powerful scientific and societal needs. The vision of LERU universities is to support both disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity as equally important to solve intractable scientific problems and to address unprecedented challenges faced by human societies. Academic institutions that successfully harness the potential of interdisciplinary research and education, while keeping the right balance between disciplinarity and interdisciplinarity, will be able to reap major benefits, positioned as they will be at the centre of a system that produces knowledge to improve the life of many.
Yet, implementing such a vision of interdisciplinarity presents significant challenges. This paper analyses how LERU universities reflect on, adapt and improve a system that was shaped by strong disciplinary specialisation and is now increasingly collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature, and what strategies they adopt in dealing with changing ways of conducting research and pressing societal challenges. The paper provides evidence of recent initiatives, structures and projects at LERU universities to support interdisciplinarity. It also provides a rich set of recommendations for universities, academics, journals, funders and policy makers on how interdisciplinarity can be fostered.
