Overview and Objectives

The individual grants competition supports researchers in any field of knowledge, seeking to develop research work for obtaining the academic degree of Doctor in national or foreign institutions, or who wish to pursue post-doctoral research edge in research units nationals.

Scholarships Postdoctoral (BPD) - Aim to doctoral candidates, preferably less than six years to conduct advanced research in institutions of scientific and technological system Portuguese of recognized competence. The maximum duration of the grant is six years, with the assent of the intermediate evaluation (held at the end of the first three years), it can not be awarded for periods of less than three consecutive months.

PhD Scholarships (BD) - Aim to candidates who meet the conditions for entry into cycle of studies leading to obtain the academic degree of doctor and who wish to develop research work leading to the award of this degree. The maximum duration of the scholarship is four years and can not be granted for periods of less than three consecutive months. The work plan can take place in national or foreign institutions.

Recipients and Eligibility

May apply for nationals, citizens of other member states of the European Union, citizens of valid residence permit holders third States' or enjoy long-term resident status, or citizens from countries with which Portugal has signed reciprocity agreements .

The exchanges whose work plan is being conducted, fully or partially, foreign institutions can only apply for citizens (domestic or foreign) proving reside permanently and usual in Portugal.

In the case of BPD can still apply for non-citizens in Portugal, provided that the application is supported by a national institution and the work plan derives entirely in Portugal.

To apply for PhD Scholarships is required:

Have completed to date of submission of the application, the academic degree master or, in alternative, have completed an undergraduate degree or have an academic, scientific or professional, both attesting the capacity to carry out a PhD by the legal scientific body and statutorily competent university where admission is sought;
Not having received a PhD scholarships PhD in companies directly funded by FCT, regardless of duration.
It has not been selected for award of any stock, regardless of their type (research grant, doctoral or PhD in business) and duration in any FCT PhD program.
To apply for a Postdoctoral scholarship is also necessary:

Have completed to date of submission of the application, the academic degree of doctor.
Not having benefited from a BPD directly funded by FCT, regardless of duration.
Financing

Selected applicants receive monthly maintenance allowances in accordance with the values ​​set out in the Regulation and, where applicable, other bag accessories, such as tuition fees, installation allowances, travel and health insurance.

The grants awarded in this contest will be financed by funds from the State Budget of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education and as eligible for funding from the European Social Fund under the Common Strategic Framework (2014-2020), in particular through the Operational Programme Human Capital.

Evaluation

The evaluation of applications is carried out by evaluation panels made based on the adaptation of the FOS classification of the Frascati Manual. Applications are scored 1,000 (minimum) to 5,000 (maximum) three evaluation criteria:

i) the candidate's merits;
ii) the merits of the work plan;
iii) merit of reception conditions.
The three evaluation criteria will be weighted, respectively, 40%, 30%, 30% in the case of applications for BD and 40%, 40%, 20% in the case of applications for BPD.

The merit of candidates for doctoral fellowship is evaluated based on two sub-criteria: base note (which reflects his academic career) and personal resume. The merit of candidates for post-doctoral fellowship is assessed from a single criterion: the personal resume (which reflects his scientific and professional career).

Personal resume consideration of candidates is carried out in an integrated manner, from a global view of the merits of their scientific and professional career. In making this assessment it is important to consider the letters of motivation and recommendation (required documents) and the various dimensions of curriculum that can demonstrate a scientific and professional background relevant.

The evaluation of the work plan and the conditions of reception is based on the qualitative assessment of the panel reasoned.

Applicants will be ranked according to the weighted average rating of the three criteria.
